I believe it was in 1991 Bob Vernon saw West giving interviews on TV.
Vernon was an out-of-work music producer who had once managed Fats Domino.
It was 1992 and I was not an out of work producer. I've worked solidly
for 40 years in the music industry. I was working on a project when I met Joe West.
He contracted with Joe to promote and produce his "solution" of the Kennedy assassination
into a big bucks TV, video, film, and book package. Vernon had known
Jim Garrison in New Orleans (at least to videotape an interview with
him). Otherwise he knew next-to-nothing about the JFK assassination
When I met West, I had been studying the JFK case for roughly five years.
Vernon is in fact a remarkable man. Perhaps 300 lbs. Looks like a large Phil Silvers.
Chain smoker. Heavy bourbon drinker. Brilliant. Exceptional gift of
gab, whether telling off-color jokes or wheeling a business deal. Large
"Roladex" of phone numbers in the entertainment industry.... Literally
many hundreds of times over the next several years he would say, "Hey,
I'm in this for the money." He envisioned parlaying the "solution to
the crime of the century" into millions of dollars.
And his point is?
He came pretty close, too, but deal after deal collapsed....sometimes there was feedback,
when there was the indications were that credibility was wanting or
that his price was much too high.
Funny that Stockwell should put it in this fashion. Remember on page 1 I said
that Stockwell was NOT at Joe's funeral? Well, it just so happens that
I had closed a deal with Fox TV for a special featuring Joe's findings.
We found out several weeks after the funeral that STOCKWELL HAD BEEN
TO FOX AND THAT THE PROGGRAM DIRECTOR HAD BEEN FIRED. When we called
Fox back, they had no idea what we aere talking about. THe same thing
happend with MPI. STOCKWELL WENT UNINVITED TO MPI AND THE NEXT THING
WE KNOW, they had pulled the video off the shelves. MPI told us that
Stockwell wanted them to do a program on JFK that would "heal the
nation."
Meanwhile, the FBI also contacted Joe West after seeing him making broad claims on
TV about Hugh having been involved in the assassination.
That's not true, a total fabrication, a lie. The FBI contacted Joe after seeing
a newspaper article. Retired agent Zack Shelton's radio interview clearly
states that and it is available on this site.
They told Joe they wanted to interview Hugh, to see if there was any substance to his claims.
Joe negotiated immunity. The agents talked to Hugh at length and concluded
(correctly, Joe eventually agreed) that Hugh had NOT been involved in
killing Kennedy. At lunch afterwards, one of the agents told Joe, off
the record, that he had worked in Chicago, against organized crime,
for 7 years. He said that IF there was more to the JFK assassination
than the Warren Commission concluded, there was ONE PERSON who might
know the truth. The man was in prison in Joliet, Illinois. Joe contacted
Jimmy Files. Files eventually agree to meet with Joe and a warm relationship
ensued.
Half true, at best. Joe and Jimmy exchanged letters for a long time. Files
did NOT want to discuss anything about JFK with West. West used his
prowess as a professional investigator to finally get Files to agree
to meet with him. West met Files only once, in August of 1992. Joe West
never got to hear Files confess. Nor, did Joe "coach" Files
in any manner. We have the proof in the communications between them,
including TAPE RECORDINGS OF THEIR PHONE CONVERSATIONS. Stockwell has
never heard those tapes but I think he did read the letters.
